In this primer, I put foundational principles of Womanist Theology alongside the defining aspects of Alice Walker’s key characters and the voices of Womanist theologians. It blends theology, storytelling, and personal reflection to deepen readers’ understanding of Womanist Theology. Readers are invited to explore their own stories as they explore authenticity, survival, community, and self-determination. Much like The Color Purple, this book calls for the reclaiming of the sacred in our everyday lives. It invites readers to reclaim their inherent divine worth and imagine new possibilities for identity, faith, and liberation.

My Why
The Color Purple is canon in Black households. I watched the movie throughout my childhood, and unknowingly, it was my introduction to Womanist Theology. Reading the novel later, Alice Walker’s preface clarified its spiritual grounding, a dimension often overlooked. My Faith Formation class, Womanist Interpretation class, the 2023 Color Purple Musical, and conversations shaped this offering. My connection to this work extends beyond personal reflection as it is grounded in both my academic training and vocational commitments.
I’ve built my teaching approach over two decades of social services work, along with education experience, and my seminary formation. I have had the opportunity to be an educator, advocate, activist, and visionary. My MA in Teaching Special Education gave me the skills to develop accessible materials. My MDiv with a concentration in social transformation provided a theological foundation for engaging in Womanist Theology as both an intellectual and activist pursuit. I strive to cultivate opportunities for personal growth that can challenge shame-based teachings.
I believe it is crucial to translate scholarly insight into practical tools. I wanted to provide an introduction to Womanist Theology with a personal entry point for everyday Black women. This work includes not only theologians but the words of artists and ancestors to honor the collective sacred knowledge of Black women. This primer is an opportunity to support people in re-reading scripture through the lenses of emotion, race, gender, and embodiment. I hope to empower readers to be confident, outspoken, and dedicated to meaningful change in their own lives.
